Home Improvement

We’re starting to get some clean-up work done at my house from the fire a while back. That and finishing school has made The Gnome want to gear up for some heavy cleaning. It’ll be a lot of work, but can be fun in the right light.

Consistently one of the writers that we at Ret-Conned HQ have the most fun reading is Greg Rucka. We were disappointed after the fabulous Batwoman run on Detective Comics last year when Rucka announced he wasn’t going to write for DC so that he could pursue other projects. While there’s nothing better than having a favorite writer writing your favorite characters, we figured that whatever Rucka decided to do instead would be interesting to watch. Kris is really excited about the new Punisher series that Rucka will write for Marvel and I’m paying close attention to his recently started web comic about steampunk airship pirates. It looks like that Rucka and artist Rick Burchett have quite an adventure in store for us.

The thing I’m most intrigued by is how Rucka posted his script along with the first panel of the comic. I don’t know if this is something he’s planning to do all of the time, but as a fellow webcomic writer I hope he does. It’s definitely interesting to see how a professional writer blocks out the scenes, the notes he gives about the art, and then looking at the final comic to see how Burchett interpreted those notes.

The scripts that I normally write for Kris are not near as detailed from an artistic perspective. Since a big part of doing this comic is giving Kris an outlet to experiment with his artwork, the scripts we work with are more skeletal that Kris fleshes out artistically however the muses move him. Conveniently enough, working this way is great for someone who doesn’t know a lot about writing art notes for scripts. If Rucka continues posting his scripts with each page of Lady Sabre, hopefully I’ll pick up a thing or two and can improve my script writing in the process. In the next couple of months, Kris might start getting more art notes, for better or worse.
