Watching the Watchers

DC has been posting short interviews with the writers of the DC Reboot books. Some of them have been tight-lipped and uninteresting, while others have done a great job about getting Ret-Conned HQ excited about the new books. The interview with Paul Cornell about Demon Knights and Stormwatch are one of the latter, although it got some more excited than others.

Captain America: The First Avenger opens in two weeks and Marvel has released a new trailer for it. While 95% of the footage has been seen before in all of the other trailers, the first couple of seconds show that Cap’s modern-day origin will appear in the film. Kris and I are really hoping that this is the end of the film and not part of the opening which leads to a WWII flashback. Marvel has also announced they’ve begun work on Thor 2 which will debut after Iron Man 3 during the summer of 2013. Kenneth Branagh will not be returning as director, which means both Marvel movies in 2013 will be sequels to previous movies without the directors that made the originals. Branagh and Favreau have such strong artistic visions that it’ll be interesting to see if these sequels suffer without them.

Dark Knight Rises has been a film with very tight security so as not to leak details. However, insiders have leaked that Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman costume will look like Catwoman. Specifically, the designs are based on Darwyn Cooke’s costume redesign that has become Selina’s modern look. I didn’t find this terribly surprising since Catwoman’s costume is one of the most realistic costumes in the DCU, but it’s nice to get confirmation on that.

Travis, what’s on your pull list?

  • Daomu #5 - This book is really pretty and I can see why it would make for an interesting graphic novel, but as a monthly series the story really starts to drag.
  • Flashpoint: The Canterbury Cricket #1 - I loved the character just as I thought it would, until he started giving his origin story. Pretty boring pontificating.
  • Gotham City Sirens #24 - The could end the series here and it would be good. Perfect setup for the reboot. I’m not sure what they’re going to do for two more issues.
