British Invasion

New comics come out today and as so often happens, we’re of differing opinions on what they’ll be like. Honestly, that’s a little bit of an overstatement. We both think that Brightest Day Aftermath: The Search for Swamp Thing is going to be pretty bad, especially after reading the latest previews. I think it has the potential to be hilariously bad in a good way, but Kris just thinks it will be bad. We both agree that it is really completely unnecessary, but I feel it’s important to check out. Swamp Thing and Constantine are two of my favorite comic book characters whom I’ve never read. I’m really hoping that Aftermath will give me a good sense of what the characters will be like after the reboot to see how interested I’ll be.

I didn’t think I would, but I’m definitely finding it harder to care about any DC comics other than Flashpoint comics that are coming out before September. I wouldn’t say I don’t care about the particular story lines since I know they are ending. Nor do I feel particularly excited about the reboot. I find that I just want to get a sense of what this all means, but I can’t do that until September. Kris feels it would be better even if we just had October’s solicitations. That way we’d have a little bit more of a sense of where things are going.

We know that the 52 books announced for September are not everything out of the reboot. They’ve said that Batman Beyond, which has only had six issues to date, will continue and will be joined by Superman Beyond and Justice League Beyond. DC has also mentioned that Donna Troy, Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain have been “benched”. At least we know that these characters aren’t dead (or never existed in the new universe). I’m sure it’s just wishful reading of Bleeding Cool’s wording, but I’m hoping that since the article mentioned “Stephanie and Cassandra Batgirls” that we don’t rule out Stephanie or Cassandra being in the comics, period. They could have a different hero role or they could just be plain-clothed non-heroes. Here’s hoping.

Cartoon Network has released a teaser trailer for their new Green Lantern animated series and I must say my interest has been piqued. Granted, they had me at Bruce Timm but the images from the trailer look pretty cool. I like the square Bruce Timm look for Hal Jordan, it’s pretty fitting. I find it really interesting that this version of Hal is also being used on the cover of the Wii and DS versions of the Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters video game. The Xbox 360 and PS3 use cover art with Ryan Reynolds. Seems like an odd marketing decision, but I’ve given up trying to predict anything related to the Green Lantern movie.
