Family Realignment

Judd Winick has done an awesome job with Power Girl since he took over the series a year ago. Both PG and Generation Lost demonstrated that Winick knows how to write solid, genuine personal connections between characters. The appearances of both Batmans in Power Girl demonstrate this to a degree that we are ready for Power Girl and the Bat Family to have a more concrete relationship.

The August DC solicitations include the 80s and 90s eras of the DC Retroactive one-shots. It surprised me at first that the Green Lantern 90s solicitation was a Kyle Rayner story until I remembered that in the 90s, Kyle WAS the only Green Lantern. I have no interest in the DC Retroactive line, but little realizations like that really make you realize how much the stories have changed of the past decades.

Speaking of Kyle Rayner, he appears on the cover of the August Green Lantern Corps, so my theory of “something’s happened to Kyle” in War of the Green Lanterns appears to be false. However, the reappearance of Kyle on a cover has made both Kris and I realize that Hal hasn’t appeared on any of the covers, nor has he been discussed in the present tense in any Green Lantern solicitation after War of the Green Lanterns. The final issue of War of the Green Lanterns: Aftermath also mentions the new Green Lantern of Earth. We at Ret-Conned HQ don’t think that they’ll introduce a fifth human as Lantern of Sector 2814. Kris thinks that Kyle will become the “Green Lantern of Earth”, so Hal can run around the universe doing his Hal thing. We also have to keep in mind the proposed Red Lantern Corp book. It’s possible that one of the Earth GLs will permanently switch colors so they can become an anchor of that book.

Marvel also released their solicitations for August. Their big event “Fear Itself” will be rolling into its fifth month, with two more months to go. Also, August is the beginning of the Marvel Ultimate universe reboot where all Marvel Ultimate books are going back to issue #1. The covers for these issues are pretty awesome.

Travis, what’s on your pull list?

  • Batman & Robin #23 - The Winick written character I enjoy reading more than Power Girl is Jason Todd. Winick’s done an awesome job of blending what he’s been doing with his previous Todd story arcs and Morrison’s previous Todd appearance in B&R. Can’t wait to see how this falls out.
  • Batman: Gates of Gotham #1 - Gorgeous artwork, Dick and Tim working together, the return of Cassandra, and it includes one of my favorite villains. What’s not to love?
  • Darkwing Duck #12
  • DC Comics Presents Batman Dark Knight, Dark City - I think the Riddler is the Batman villain who has changed most dramatically over the years. This story really shows a darker Riddler as well as introducing all sorts of things Morrison reused in his Return of Bruce Wayne arc.
  • Tiny Titans #40 - The return of Lunch Lady Darkseid. Aw, yeah!

Kris, what’s on your pull list?
