Rainbow Fantasies

The War of the Green Lanterns event is currently going on across the Green Lantern books and in a latest twist, the four Earth Green Lanterns are hijacking powers of the other color corps (both covers out this week refer to this fact so I’m not deeming this a spoiler). While it was interesting to see the reasons for the colors that they picked, we think a more fun selection is in order.

The Movie Hype Machines for both Thor and Green Lantern have kicked it up to 11 as new teaser images have been released for both movies. The most interesting thing about these images is that the Thor images make me really excited for the movie and want to see it, while the Green Lantern movie looks stupider and more disappointing with every image. Hopefully, Green Lantern will surprise us all because I would like to believer that we don’t need Christopher Nolan to make a good DC comics movie. The best new movie promotional material is hands down the new Little Thor ad that is spoofing Volkswagen’s Darth Vader Super Bowl ad. Watch it, absolute gold.

Image released their July solicitations which included five new issue #1s or one shots. This is after June’s solicitations included a whooping eleven new #1’s and one shots. While not all of these will succeed, it’s impressive to see such a large number of new creator-owned material hitting the market.

I still think that David Kelley’s Wonder Woman pilot is going to be a complete train wreck, but it’s interesting to read about how the show keeps changing. First there was the costume change that improved from the first official costume images, and now there’s changes to the script that appear to make Diana much more of the Amazon warrior that she should be and less like Alley McBeal in red spandex. Part of me wonders where the changes are coming from. Is Kelley actively changing things based on the response he’s getting from his target audience? Are DC, NBC, or both pushing for changes? Or is this all part of Kelley’s master plan? At this point, I almost believer that Kelley realized he could never make something that would live up to the standards of die-hard Wonder Woman fans, so he intentionally leaked a horrible script and equally horrible costume to enrage said fans. Now he’s making changes back into the show that he always intended to create and instead of having it compared to the fan’s original unrealistic expectations it will be compared to “what it could have been” and might gain more acceptance. It’s a crazy Evil Genius master plan that is probably giving Kelley too much credit, but it’s something to consider as I sit here in my tin foil hat.

Travis, what’s on your pull list?

  • Batman #709 - I’ll spoil this by telling you what did not happen. Hines does not get killed by a raging horde of beavers as I really wished he would for making us wade through this tedious mess.
  • Darkwing Duck #11 - I really want some calamari and chicken wings after reading this issue.
  • Gotham City Sirens #22 - I wonder if Selina’s sister was returned to continuity just for this issue. If so, I’m sorely disappointed in them.
  • Tiny Titans #39 - Tiny Titans Cassandra Cain is the CUTEST THING EVER!!!!!!!!!!

Kris, what’s on your pull list?
