Culinary Style

Kris wondered immediately after it was announced about why the War of the Green Lantern Aftermath book wasn’t just a part of Green Lantern. It wasn’t until the July solicitations came out that we realized that there is no Green Lantern book that month for the aftermath to be in, although that still didn’t explain why it was a separate book. Then I realized that Geoff Johns has written every issue of Green Lantern, but he wasn’t writing this. I need to avoid having these realizations first thing in the morning when I’m really hungry.

As always, there’s lots of interesting stuff in the July DC solicitations. In the Green Lantern world, we are (clearly) dealing with the fallout from War of the Green Lanterns. This is the second month of fallout from the War of the Green Lanterns and we have yet to see Kyle Rayner on any of the covers. Kris and I don’t think he’s going to die, but we’re starting to wonder if he’s no longer a Green Lantern. Kyle was always the reluctant hero that was going to do the best job that he could because was chosen to do it, but if something forced him to leave the Corps we could easily see him returning to some sort of civilian life.

Flashpoint is continuing with a vengeance and is looking cooler and cooler. I’ve never been heavily attracted to the big event books, but Flashpoint is starting to draw me in. I’m not necessarily that intrigued by the whole “Flash finding out why the world has changed” main story, but a lot of the Elseworld style side stories sound really interesting. I’m not sure how much I’ll actually pick up, but the Batman, Frankenstein, and Deadman/Grayson books definitely sound interesting. It feels like the World of Flashpoint books, while technically a mini is basically stand alone issues. If that’s the case, I’m definitely going to pick up issue two because it’s got Traci 13 on the cover and Traci 13 is just awesome.

Booster Gold looks very interesting this month as Doomsday comes calling. Doomsday was created by Jurgens originally and Kris thinks that he wanted to do something with Doomsday in Booster Gold all along. As Kris’s theory goes, you can’t just reintroduce a character like Doomsday and not do something big with him, so they had Doomsday run through the DCU before he got to the main point of his return to the universe in July’s Booster Gold. However, the Reign of Doomsday stuff is continuing in Action Comics #903, so now we’re not sure what’s going on. Booster Gold comes out before Action Comics, so maybe Doomsday is crossing through Booster on his way to Action. Granted, Booster jumps so easily around the time stream that there’s no reason why Doomsday’s appearance in Booster has to follow anybody else’s continuity.

In the Batman world, they’ve re-solicited The Dark Knight #4, David Finch’s self-written and drawn semi-supernatural crime noir Bruce (Batman Batman) Wayne story. This book has had a really weird release schedule with the first issue released in December, issue number two came out last month, and three isn’t due until sometime in May. Now, issue four is targeted for July with a brand new artist. Based on the erratic release schedule, it’s unsurprising that Finch couldn’t keep up with both the writing and artistic sides of production. Hopefully, if Finch is no longer pulling double duty the book can get back to a regular release schedule. Unfortunately, it’s too little too late as we at Ret-Conned HQ have given up on the book. In fact, we’ve lost interest with both of the Bruce Batman books. Dick is Batman, he’s doing an awesome job and the books he’s in are entertaining and on schedule, so why do we need anything else?

In Secret Six, we’re making Bane an angry badass again, which I hope is as cool as I think it’s going to be. The Gotham City Sirens solicitation really makes me think that book is going to end in August or September. We’ve had a major storyline for each of the three main characters (we’re currently in Harley’s storyline), and now they’re soliciting a major fight between the three characters that I bet will result in the three splitting ways and the book ending. Finally, WHO CARES ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE CASSANDRA CAIN IS COMING BACK AND SHE’S WEARING HER BATGIRL UNIFORM!!!!!
