One Year Later

One year ago today we posted the first Ret-Conned strip. It’s been an interesting year, but as much as everything changes everything stays the same.

They’ve started filming the Wonder Woman TV pilot and BREAKING NEWS they’ve fixed the costume!! Gone is the latex fetish pants and boots, to be replaced with with some sort of darker stretchy material. Also, the boots are traditional red and lost the big heel. Overall, I think the new look works very well. The Gnome thinks the latex corset still looks a little awkward in the leaked action shots, but I think any top looks awkward in still photos of people running and jumping on car hoods. We’ll have to see how it actually looks in video form.

Green Lantern comes out in theaters this in June, but you wouldn’t know that from the current advertising campaign (or lack there of). Warner Bros executives blame slow CGI work for the delays in doing a big promotional push, but claim that will be fixed this weekend at WonderCon. To start that, they’ve announced that Geoffrey Rush will voice Tomar Re. I was honestly surprised to hear they hadn’t cast a voice actor for this yet. Anyway, they say a new trailer will debut in front of Thor on May 6. The irony of a DC trailer in front of a Marvel movie really makes me laugh.

The BBC has released a full trailer for sereis 6 of Doctor Who. The trailer is gloriously creepy and awesome looking. Neil Gaiman (who writes one of the episodes this season) mentioned that one of the lines in the trailer is from his episode. he doesn’t say which line, but if I had to guess it’s the “Fear me. I killed all of them.” line. It just sounds like a Gaiman line, and it’s masterfully delivered by Matt Smith.

Finally, speaking of trailers, Marvel has released a trailer for its Fear Itself summer event. I don’t really have anything to say about this other than wonder why we have a trailer for a comic book. I mean, seriously? Trailers for comics and books are something I just don’t understand.

Travis, what’s on your pull list?

  • Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #1 - It was Godzilla, so I had to buy it. I won’t be buying any others. They’re starting from scratch with Godzilla attacking and nobody knowing what Godzilla is. That’s cool. They have the Japanese government/military/self defense force/whatever doing the one thing that the Japanese G/M/SDF/W would never do. That’s not cool. They have an Obama caricature complaining about extremist Obama caricature slander. That’s kind of lame and reaching. To use the book’s favorite phrase (uttered three times, including as the final line of the book delivered by “Obama” himself): you’ve got to be f@&#ing kidding me.
  • Gotham City Sirens #21 - Really disappointed that this arc is getting interrupted next month by the Azrael tie-in. Calloway does an excellent job with Harley and it’s made for a very solid story.
  • Jimmy Olsen #1 - This started out as a second feature in the back of Action Comics before the second features got axed when DC drew the line at $2.99. It’s a fun romp with lots of in jokes and general Jimmy Olsen craziness.

Travis, what’s on Kris’s pull list?

  • Action Comics #899 - The conclusion of Lex’s attempts to harness the Black Lantern Energy. Action #900 is going to be epic.
  • Amazing Spider-Man #657 - This would probably be interesting if you were very vested in Spider-man, the Fantastic Four, and Spider-man’s relationship with Johnny storm. That’s three strikes for me, so I was bored with it and stopped reading half way through.
  • Detective Comics #875 - Scott Snyder’s run on Detective continues to be amazing. I’m having to refrain from pulling this book or it would make me buy everything that Snyder’s ever written or continues to write and I’d develop such a man crush on the poor guy that the Gnome would be jealous. As it is, I’ll probably pick it up in trade.
  • Dollhouse: Epitaphs #1 - I didn’t think this would be any good, but it surprised me. I really think if they’d gotten to the post-apocalyptic future a lot sooner in the show, it might have lasted longer than two seasons.
  • Gotham City Sirens #21
  • Green Arrow #10 - We learn more about Galahad and Ollie’s starting to think that the giant forest that just popped out of nowhere might not be a good thing. Naw, you think?
  • Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #8 - The cover gives the main thrust of this comic away. In the next issue, Hal & Guy need to find themselves a Taun Taun, quick.
  • Jimmy Olsen #1 - Last time we saw Jimmy Olsen in War of the Supermen, he was trying to rescue his girlfriend Natasha Irons. Now they’re not together and she’s trying to help him get his ex-girlfriend back. Uh, huh?
  • Justice Society of America #49 - I really hate Scott Kolin’s art. I’m also starting to think that he draws everybody with a really stupid expression on their face because the characters don’t understand this story any more than the reader does.
  • Spider-Girl #5 - Kris was going to drop this book until he heard they’re canceling it in June. With three more issues left, he might as well finish it off. It’s fun and quirky, but can you believe that last page? Dude, you do not need to have every application on your Mac in your Dock. What are you thinking?!?
  • Teen Titans #93 - Solstice joins the team and Red Robin has a huge inner monologue. Also, prehensile boobs!
  • Wonder Woman #609 - This is the issue where the writers explain to Diana (and the reader) exactly what is going on. I knew this would happen soon, but I was surprised by who was doing the telling.
  • Zatanna #11
