The Longest Rumor

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been tangentially associated with the third Christopher Nolan Batman film since before the first Christopher Nolan Batman film came out. First, there were rumors he would replace Heath Ledger as the Joker. Then, there were rumors he would play the Riddler. Nolan pointed out that the Riddler would not be in the third film and then later announced Bane and Catwoman. The JGL rumors started to die down just in time for sources to learn that he was negotiating to be in the film after all. Well, after weeks of speculation we can now state with certainty that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be in Dark Knight Rises. We still don’t know who he will play, although there are plenty of ideas.

C2E2 was this weekend and since it’s early in the Con Season, we actually had some interesting announcements come out of it. We didn’t expect that Greg Rucka’s self-imposed indie exile would last too long. We were really hoping that he’d make his way back to DC and pick up working with Batwoman, The Question, and all the other characters he’s helped to make awesome. However, he ended up at Marvel instead and is starting a new Punisher series. I’ve never read any Punisher, but if anybody can do a great gritty, crazy vigilante Punisher it would be Rucka. Marvel also announced that Mark Waid is rebooting Daredevil and getting him back to basics: lawyer by day, kick-ass blind dude by night. I’ve always liked Daredevil because, as Comics Should Be Good pointed out this week, he’s different than most radiation-induced superheroes as he didn’t immediately become a super hero, but grew into it over time. A lot of the most recent stuff they’ve been doing with Matt Murdoch have gotten away from this original message. Glad they’re going back to it.

Speaking of Daredevil, Fox has announced that they’re working on a new Daredevil movie. I’m not a big fan of rehashing movie ideas that have already made it to theaters, but I’m honestly glad to hear the news. The Ben Affleck movie was a real disappointment, but I think the character is an interesting one and, done well, could do a great job on a movie. I’m sure chances are slim, but I’d love to see Michael Clark Duncan back as the Kingpin. He was the only redeeming quality in the original movie and I’d love to see him get a second shot at the character.
