Emergency Priorities

Other than the fact that I was alone on the stairs, this story is 100% true.

The Super Bowl (Yeah, NFL. I said it. Come sue me. I dare you.) featured a bunch of new movie trailers interspersed within the football action. The most highly anticipated trailer at Ret-Conned HQ was the Captain America: The First Avenger trailer. Kris was really pleased with it, but I was kind of disappointed. The trailer itself is only 30 seconds and while it looks like the movie will be good, you really couldn’t get a good feel for it in the trailer. I guess my biggest concern is that if you have someone who knows nothing about Captain America (and therefore doesn’t know why they should care about his movie), there was not enough meat in the trailer to convince you otherwise. This trailer was definitely made for the hardcore comic fans and while that makes sense, it’s surprising that is what they premiered in front of the largest television audience in history. Also, you only saw the briefest glimpse of Red Skull, which is really what I wanted to see more than anything else. Kris and I agree he looks awesome, but I really wish we could have seen more of him or that he would have said something. I guess we’ll just have to wait for the next trailer to come out.

The X-Men First Class trailer premiered today and the movie actually looks pretty interesting. I have to admit that the idea that the first mission the nascent X-Men undertake is stopping the Cuban Missile Crisis is a rather intriguing idea. The short glances that we got of some of the mutant effects seem pretty interesting. The biggest complaint I have is that it’s the 1960s and the X-Men happen to have the Blackbird already and it looks identical to the Blackbird from the original trilogy. Are we really supposed to assume they didn’t make any upgrades to the thing in 40 years? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Zack Snyder says that the modern day Superman will punch people, which is good I guess since he seems to have forgotten how to do that in the comic. What will make this really interesting is the rumors that the main villain is Ursa, Zod’s super creepy right hand woman. If Superman is going to be more physical, then I’m guessing this means that he and Ursa are going to brawl it out. It’ll be interesting how they handle the whole Superman punching a woman thing, or if they’ll establish so hard how evil Ursa is that by the time it happens nobody minds.

Travis, what’s on your pull list?

  • Atomic Robo & The Deadly Art of Science #3 - Young Robo’s starting to get that sarcastic bent that made Old Robo so much fun. A definite improvement over previous issues in this arc.
  • Batgirl #18 - Miller did an excellent job writing Clarion the Witch Boy. I hope he shows up again soon.
  • Birds of Prey #9 - We’ve hit the shocking climax of the Death of Oracle arc. Can’t wait to see what the resolution turns out to be.
  • Cinderella: Fables are Forever #1 - This is my first dip into the Fables Universe and I rather enjoyed it. That’s a very dangerous feeling.
  • Knight & Squire #5 - Each of the previous issues of this mini-series were separate stories in the lives of Knight & Squire. This issue is starting to pull everything together.
  • Red Robin #20 - This issue does a really great job of making a seamless crossover. It’s a shared universe so there doesn’t have to be a Huge Event that happens to force superheroes together; sometimes all it takes is a phone call.
  • The Unwritten #22 - This series is such a joy to read every month. This issue had a great mix of story jumping and exposition that led to me spend another 20 minutes on Wikipedia researching classic literature when I finished.

Kris, what’s on your pull list?
