Hooded Obsession

If you’ve been paying close attention while reading any of DC The New 52 books, you might have noticed the same hooded woman appear in every issue. She hasn’t always been easy to spot, so hunting her down can consume you. I finally had a chance to read last week’s issues and while in earlier weeks it was hard to find this mysterious femme fatale, this time there were multiple issues where she was blatantly obvious. To me, she looks like the woman who told Flash about the need to combine the timelines in Flashpoint #5. I’m betting that we’ll eventually get to some sort of crossover event where she serves a bigger purpose. For now my biggest question is if she’ll be in next month’s issues as well.

The Gnome and I just finished watching The Wedding of River Song, bringing another season of Doctor Who to a very exciting conclusion. Neither Torchwood Miracle Day nor A Game of Thrones is out on DVD yet, so I’m not sure what we’re going to obsessively watch next. The second season of The Walking Dead starts this month, but considering that we have still only watched half of the first season, I’m not sure we’ll jump into season two. Kris says the finale of Season 1 makes the whole thing worth it, so maybe we’ll give it another shot.

Travis, what was on your pull list last week?

  • Blackhawks #1 - Big explosions, over the top army equipment, crazy code names - this books really is just DC’s version of GI Joe. Not sure that’s a bad thing.
  • The Fury of Firestorm #1 - I’ve never been a huge Firestorm fan, but decided to go for it since it’s Gail Simone. It didn’t really wow me.
  • Justice League Dark #1 - Individually I’m intrigued by each of the characters in this book, so putting them all together could be very interesting. I especially wonder if we’ll end up with any interesting Madame Xanadu insights between modern day Xanadu and the Xanadu the Younger in Demon Knights.
  • Teen Titans #1 - It’s my only way to see Tim being Tim.
  • Voodoo #1 - I’m intrigued enough to give it at least another issue.

Kris, what was on your pull list last week?

  • All-Star Western #1 - I figured this would be good, but I’m definitely impressed. This book not only continues to capture what makes Jonah Hex awesome, but also ties into Gates of Gotham and the history of Arkham Asylum. It’s mystery/horror/action/Batman all wrapped up together.
  • Angel & Faith #2 - This series has a lot of potential, and I’m excited to see where it goes.
  • Aquaman #1 - Aquaman is not a joke! That’s all this issue says, but it says it well and makes it funny. A good set up for the series.
  • Batman: The Dark Knight #1 - This book kind of makes you stop and say, “Wait, what?” a couple of times. I don’t know if that’s intentional.
  • Blackhawks #1 - Is the chick with the dark hair, eye-patch, and red suit Lady Blackhawk?
  • Brilliant #1 - Bendis writing a very different book than Ultimate Spider-Man. Worth a read.
  • Flash #1 - This is a good start of something possibly great. It could go either way.
  • The Fury of Firestorm #1 - I’ve always believe Gail Simone’s ability as a writer was hit and miss. She can write a very narrow field very well, but can easily fall into bad, poorly written cliches and inane dialogue. This is clearly one of those situations.
  • Ghostbusters #1 - It’s Ghostbusters, in a comic. You either want to read that or you don’t.
  • Green Lantern: New Guardians #1 - They almost completely change the tone of Kyle’s origin, basically negating all the interesting character development of his run as the only GL. And then we have a weak set up to an odd premise.
  • I, Vampire #1 - I told Trav this was going to be the surprise hit of the relaunch and I was right. Pick of the NEW 52! If you’ve ever read, watched, or been told a story about Vampires that you enjoyed, give this book a shot.
  • Justice League Dark #1 - I enjoyed this book, but it didn’t wow me. I’ve always claimed to be a fan of DC magic, but I want Captain Marvel and Shadowpact.
  • Savage Hawkman #1 - This book is a mess. Not bad, but not good either. It reads almost like a preview. Nothing is given, but it might be worth a second look.
  • Superman #1 - George Perez is off this book at #7. I think that’s a good thing.
  • Teen Titans #1 - A complete reboot of the characters. No real way to tell with just this small piece.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #2 - I’m still trying to piece everything together, but I’m loving it so far.
  • Ultimate Spider-Man #2 - Still impressive.
  • Ultimates #2 - Holy Shit! No holds bared. Loki gets the best moment in this book, out of no where.
  • Voodoo #1 - What? Was that really a comic?
