Travis I am an unabashed Cassandra Cain fan. Of course, I fell in love with her after she had exited stage left and handed the Batgirl reigns over to Stephanie Brown, so my main access to her has been through back issues. I’ve been waiting with baited breath for her return, and was really excited to hear that Cassandra Cain would be returning (sort of) in Red Robin #17. (The CC news is near the end of the interview. The rest of the interview about Road Home is pretty interesting, too.)
In a way, I’m not surprised that Cassandra Cain would be returning now. To her, crime fighting was always part of Bruce’s Mission. She was a soldier and Bruce was her general. Once Bruce Wayne presumably died, her general was gone and so was her mission. Instead of becoming ronin and just working for whomever came next, even if it was someone like Dick whom she knew, she just stopped. Her Mission was over, there was no need to keep fighting. Nicieza says that Red Robin #17 is going to be a quiet reintroduction and that she’ll come back again several months later. I fully expect that in RR17, Tim will run into her and mention that Bruce is alive and back, then she’ll return later ready to resume the fight.
There’s been more fallout from the DCE reorganization announcements from last week. It now sounds like at least 80 people at DC will either be laid off or moved from NYC to LA. What’s most interesting it’s not just people related to the now-dead Wildstorm imprint who are affect as even some editors at Vertigo are getting laid off. It really sucks to hear about anybody losing their jobs, especially in such a massive move like this. Hopefully, it’ll all work out later down the road. As another step in the reorganization, Bob Harras has been named DC’s new Editor in Chief. This is the first time that DC has had an EiC since 2002 and the industry seems pleased by the news. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of these changes in the months to come.
