Shopping Buddies

I was really surprised when I heard that Dynamite Entertainment had acquired the rights to Vampirella and was going to start publishing new Vampirella comics. Vampirella, while an important character in pulp comic history, seems really out of place in today’s comic ecosystem. The blatant eroticism and sexual exploitation inherent in a character who wears a ribbon bikini when she’s not bathing naked in a pool of blood lies in stark contrast to an industry that’s actively trying to build female readership. I wasn’t surprised to hear that her reintroduction will include a wardrobe redesign, although it makes you wonder how comic heroines find new costumes.
