Tiffany and I used to be big Anime fans. While we still enjoy watching it, we don’t watch quite as often as we used to. Kris enjoys it occasionally, but doesn’t keep track of some of the shows as often as we do. Recently, we’ve been watching Eureka Seven*, which covers all basics of an anime: mecha, alien planets, cute teenage couples, awesome JPop techno, crazy girls with weird colored hair, and trippy animation sequences. It really is a very good show and has some very poignant and emotional scenes in it. There’s one conversation in particular in the third episode between the main character, Renton, and his grandfather that’s essentially setting up Renton’s journey to go off and become a man. It’s a really touching scene, except that for most of the scene there is a bird pecking around between the characters and the viewer. I’m sure there’s some deep Japanese symbolism that this stupid Westerner doesn’t understand but it seems really weird. If you click on the screen shot below, it’ll take you to the YouTube video from this part of the episode. The conversation starts at about 1:10 and the bird shows up soon after.

There’s a lot of really awesome news coming out of the comic world. We’ll talk about it more for What’s on your pull list?, but I’m really excited about the new Aqualad showing up in Brightest Day this week. My first real exposure to the Aquaman side of the DCU was when Tempest) returned as a badass in Titans #15 only to get killed in Blackest Night. From there, you get the badassness of Mera) during Blackest Night which leads into Aquaman’s return. I’m expecting awesome things from this Aqualad to keep the trend going, especially after reading back issues of the old Aquaman comic and Sword of Atlantis. SoA started out an interesting idea and then got stupid quick and really demonstrates how people didn’t know what do with the undersea properties. So far I’ve been impressed with what Geoff Johns has done. I hope it stays this way.

  • Pronounced Eh-Oo-Recca. Apparently the Japanese do not have a unique sound for “eu.” I’d say I knew this before watching the show, but I took Linguistics Pass/Fail in college, so wasn’t really paying attention.
