I'll admit it: I completely froze talking to Brian Clevinger. I walked up with my stack of Atomic Robo #1's to get signed and he says, "Hey, it's a hardcore fan!"
My brain starts screaming, "He's on to us! Everybody play it cool!!"
Apparently "playing it cool" for my brain is equivalent to "playing it Tommy" because I went deaf, dumb and blind. Whenever you see me playing pinball when I'm "playing it cool," bet on me. Heavily.
Despite my social awkwardness, Clevinger was a really nice guy and very gracious. The new FCBD Atomic Robo was definitely the highlight of the books this year. I've heard some people complain that this year's FCBD book wasn't as good as last year's introduction of Dr. Dinosaur, but this is like complaining that the milkshake you had today wasn't as good as yesterday's because it didn't have a cherry on top. They're both great milkshakes, one just had something extra special. This year's Terror Birds story had very solid and funny writing from Clevinger. As always, I'm impressed by how much expression Scott Wegener can give Robo just by changing his eyes.
Some of the other books that Austin Books & Comics were giving away included DC's "After Watchmen, What Next?" samplers. They released these after the Watchmen movie came out to promote some of their other long running series available in trade. It was a great way to figure out the next thing I want to collect after I finish Lucifer. I can safely say I'm going to skip Warren Ellis's Transmetropolitan and Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing. Moore has always been really hit or miss for me. I wouldn't say that Swamp Thing is a miss, but it definitely didn't hit me hard enough for me to give it my lunch money. I think I will be looking into Warren Ellis's Planetary at some point, but I'll definitely be getting Brian Vaughn's Y: The Last Man. After reading one issue, I'm hooked.
All this great stuff, and I still haven't read through everything I got this weekend. As Kris said, this was a great Free Comic Book Day. Only 368 days until FCBD 2011!
