Kris This Saturday was Free Comic Book Day. We traveled away from the comfort of our local comic shop to the unknown lands of Dragon’s Lair in Austin, TX. While Dragon’s Lair was celebrating FCBD in full force, Brian Clevinger was our real draw. The writer for Atomic Robo, Trav’s favorite book, had finally come to Texas after many failed attempts.
And while I won’t say today’s comic is completely accurate, I will say one of us cough Trav cough barely said a word to his favorite writer and left upset because he didn’t ask him any of the things he wanted. At least I freaked out meeting a chick.
It should be noted that, despite his freezing up, Trav now owns copies of the first issue of every volume of Atomic Robo, signed by Brian Clevinger. And he is the first person EVER to have Clevinger sign an Atomic Robo Statue. Seen here.
I also have two copies, different covers, of Atomic Robo Vol. 1 #1 signed by Clevinger.
On the subject of Free Comic Book Day, I’d say our day was a complete success. Dragon’s Lair simply had everything laid out on a table, allowing you to take whatever you wanted. We gathered our free books and got our Robo signed. We then decided to venture to the other comic shop in Austin, Austin Books & Comics.
Ausitn B&C took a different stand on Free Comic Book Day, allowing you to take only ten books, but they put out several books in addition to those already offered for free. Also, Austin B&C had Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt, the creators of The Sixth Gun, there signing issue #1, offered as part of Free Comic Book Day.
Finally we finished out our day at the place where everybody knows our name, Bedrock City on Washington Ave. Bedrock offered a print by Terry Moore for their 20th anniversary and it was too good for us to pass up.
So, two cities, three comic book shops, and at least 50 comics acquired, I’d say it was a successful weekend in all. I’ll try to come back later this week with my thoughts on the hits and misses of the books we picked up this weekend.
