Duel-Tide Carol

It could be worse, they could be pulling together some of their favorite things, which would be very different things than the ones listed in the song. (I also want to go on record that Favorite Things is my least favorite song in the whole world and I’ll never buy an Infiniti because of how they used that song in the commercials in the early nineties.)

After this weekend, the wait was finally over: Tron: Legacy has finally hit theaters. Fortunately, I work in an awesome office that went en masse to see the film on Friday as our holiday celebration/team building exercise. I really enjoyed the film and can’t wait until I get to see it again with the Gnome and Kris.

Visually, it was absolutely stunning. I was very impressed with how they created the Tron Grid, which looks much cooler with today’s CGI effects than those from 25 years ago. At the same time, I really liked how faithful they were to a lot of the designs from the original film. i thought it was particularly fun since the primary color pallet of the film is black with neon red, orange, or blue accents. You’d think this would make for a rather drab setting, but it actually was pretty vibrant and kind of sexy in an industrial design way. I highly recommend seeing it in IMAX. Some of the large overhead vistas really look spectacular.

I thought the story was very good for what it was. Is this a complex thriller filled with intrigue and double-cross, keeping you on the edge of your seat as you try to figure out what really happened? No, of course not, but it does set up a interesting and entertaining story. I was talking to one of my coworkers who had read a review that was criticizing the plausibility of some of the parts of the film. This is a review that had no problems with the plausibility of someone getting zapped by a laser and transported inside a computer system, but they had issues with the plausibility of what happened once they were inside the computer system. It doesn’t have to be Shakespeare to have high entertainment value.

If you’ve never seen the original Tron, they provide enough information for you to enjoy this movie on its own. There are a couple of things that were subtle nods to the original movie that make me want to go back and rewatch it for it’s own sake. There’s a couple of things that could theoretically be story threads that they could do for future movies, but I those threads were so minuscule that they could easily have been missed. If they never make another Tron movie and never explore those topics, then I think it’s still perfectly satisfying.

I’m not a big proponent of 3D and I don’t think that it’s the greatest thing EVAR! I did see this in 3D and I didn’t think that anything was improved or hindered by it. There was no point in the movie where I thought “wow, that’s cool because it’s 3D!” nor was there a point where I thought a 3D effect was done just for show. To be honest, I kind of forgot the movie was in 3D and just got absorbed into the story itself. I guess that means that they did a good job with it.

Overall, I’d highly recommend and going to see Tron: Legacy if you haven’t already. If you have, send us some feedback and let me know what you thought.
