A Day in the Life...

Today is Ret-Conned’s 6 month anniversary!

I love comics. I could spend all day talking about comics. I’m not sure if that’s been made clear since we started Ret-Conned. I recently made a purchase from Midtown Comics during the 40% off sale on Grab Bags and Complete Runs. I’m expecting the package in the next few days, and the comics in it will put me over the 2000 mark. It’s hard to believe that 2 years ago I owned very few issues and maybe a couple dozen trades.

But that’s what being nerd is all about, isn’t it? It’s not about being into anything specific, it’s about being passionate about what you are into. And the more I get into comics, buying, reading, collecting, creating, the more I love them. I can’t wait for my new comics to come in, because sorting, cataloging, and filing 130 random comics sounds like the perfect way to spend an evening.

I’m getting a DC Grab Bag and an Indy Grab Bag. That’s 50 issues from DC and 80! issues from Independent(Darkhorse/Image/IDW) Companies. Our last Grab Bag was a complete success in my opinion. I spent about $14 and got Superman proposing to Lois Lane and the first appearance of the modern Superboy. A total steal in my opinion. I’ll post a full report after the package comes in.

Travis, what’s on your pull list?

  • Gotham City Sirens #16 - I’m going to pull this book through the end of this arch, since it deals with Bruce Wayne coming back and then I’m going to drop it. Writing was meh, story was pointless and any artwork that can make Selina Kyle in a bath towel look unappealing has issues.
  • I Kill Giants #1 - One of Image’s $1 first issue reprints. Interesting artwork and very cute main character, but it didn’t grab me enough to want to read more.

Kris, what’s on your pull list?

  • Action Comics #893 - Luthor vs Grodd in an over the top fight that involves brains, combat spoons, and robots. Seriously! I’m very happy with this book. The Jimmy Olsen co-feature was good, but I’m not sure when it is taking place, because it’s ignoring Jimmy being involved with Natsha Irons.
  • Detective Comics #869 - Pick of the Week. This is an old school Batman tale that really shows how the character shines. I love everything about this book.
  • Green Arrow #4 - Good story, but this book just seems to be failing to keep up the pace of the other books under the Brightest Day banner.
  • Gotham City Sirens #16 - This book seems like it could be interesting, but poor writing and art holds it up. I really hate that Paul Dini abandoned this book.
  • Justice Society of America #43 - Robinson can write very well in the small scale. It’s when the action picks up and the numbers increase that he bogs down. I’m glad we got an issue to show his strengths, not his weaknesses. The Manbat/Man-pire aspect from today’s Ret-Conned came from this book.
  • Pilot Season: The Asset #1 - I love the pilot season program. I think this is a good book, that fits into the graphic story-telling mold very easily.
  • Teen Titans #87 - I’m excited for JT Krul taking over this book, and I’m excited Felicia Henderson is writing a Static book. I just didn’t like Henderson writing this book.
  • Time Masters Vanishing Point #3 - This book is continuing Jurgens’s Booster Gold story and is also a piece of Silver Age storytelling gold.
  • Wonder Woman #603 - A real competitor for pick of the week. JMS is giving this book every he’s got, which is reflecting in Superman’s delays and Brave and the Bold’s complete disappearance. I don’t think that will matter if he becomes the guy who made Wonder Woman a must read book. This book is pretty, well written, and is creating a WW mythos worth knowing.
